Operations & Fulfillment: running the back end of your store
Behind every smooth online order is a set of operational processes most customers never see. Operations and fulfillment covers how you buy and store stock, how orders move from checkout to dispatch, how parcels are picked and packed, and how returns come back into the business. This hub gathers our guides on running the back end of an ecommerce store.
Why operations decide whether you scale
Many stores grow their sales faster than their operations can cope. The result is overselling, late dispatches, packing errors and a flood of customer service emails. Strong operations turn growth into profit instead of chaos: accurate stock levels, clear order workflows and repeatable warehouse routines let you ship more orders with the same team.
Guides in this section
- Inventory Management: forecast demand, set reorder points and keep stock accurate across channels.
- Order Processing & Management: route, track and resolve orders from checkout to delivery.
- Fulfillment & Warehousing: store, pick, pack and ship at scale, in-house or with a 3PL.
- Returns & Reverse Logistics: design a returns policy and process that protects margin and loyalty.
The core operating loop
Ecommerce operations follow a simple loop: buy stock, receive and store it, sell it, pick and pack it, ship it, and handle what comes back. Each step produces data the next step relies on. When stock counts are wrong, orders oversell; when orders are not routed correctly, dispatch slips; when returns are not processed quickly, stock that could be resold sits idle. Fix the loop end to end rather than one step at a time.
